Review of Shocker-AMP-SP

In this article, I will share my hands on review of Shocker SP Amp.

Shocker Paintball markers were manufactured by a Pennsylvania company known as Small Parts. After 2020, the company and its intellectual property are owned by Kee Action Sports

The reason for the brand’s popularity is due to the fact that the shockers were the first high-end markers in the paintball industry. They have launched many models, each one is far better than its previous launch. The brand launched the first marker in 1995, later in 2003, 2006 and more.

The company hit the market in 2020 with its improved and redesigned model known as Shocker SP Amp Paintball Marker. The Advanced Modular Platform (AMP) is more efficient and operates at low pressure. The shocker paintball guns are quite expensive, it costs more than $600 to buy a basic model.

Let’s jump into our review of Shocker SP Amp and explore the significant changes the model came up with in 2020 to make your paintball experience more fun.

Twist Bolt Lock

Just like myself, you might be fed up with the conventional paintball gun inline bolt system.

Shocker AMP SP twist lock

Most of the markers in the market are equipped with an in-line bolt system that are opened by pressing a pin. In the other models, the bolt and valve system is accessed using the Allen keys or more. In such cases, cleaning the broken paint and maintenance is usually very difficult.

That’s not the case with Shocker SP! This model redesigned its bolt system and came up with Twist-lock Bolt. One quick twist let you depressurize the shocker and unlock the fire and bolt chamber. You can slide it out quickly for maintenance and lubricate the parts. It is completely toolless access to both the valve and bolt by a single move.

Paint Handling & Efficiency

The Shocker AMP is 20% more efficient than its previous RSX model. The operating pressure of this gun is 110psi which means it’s going to take at least 3 more bucks of paintballs before you run out of air.

The previous RSX model had 160 psi operating pressure that lacked the ability to handle fragile or low-quality paintballs. But this is not the case with the Shocker AMP marker. The bolt is extremely gentle on the paintballs and doesn’t let them break inside the breech. Instead, it let them strike on the target very well.

You will feel a great difference and Improved efficiency either its electronic mode,  combined with Anti-chop technology or mechanical mode, its performs really well.

Shot Quality

Shocker SP AMP upgrades

No surprise, it was quiet and smooth!  My experience with some shockers was quite disappointing about the shot quality. However, with this one, I found a noticeable difference in the shot quality of this model.

Tool-less Solenoid Removal

This model ensures fast maintenance,  you can remove or unlock the Solenoid valve without any wrenches, Allen keys or more.  It gives you easier and fast access than ever before.

The AMP shockers come in two versions including mechanical and electronic ones.  Both versions have the same bolt and other design features. The difference is about the frame, which takes a few seconds to swap in order to transform your gun from a mechanical to an electronic one.

In addition to toolless access, it ensures fast frame removal as compared to the other models. I found it quite easy and simple to use the gun. In fact, a time-saving mechanism that works flawlessly.

Highlighted Features

  • Twist & Turn Bolt to slide out quickly
  • Low operating pressure of 110 psi
  • Electronic Mode, mechanical mode and VisionTm anti-chop system
  • Quick Exhaust Valve
  • Improved efficiency than previous models

Ergonomics Updates

The model has new curves and milling over the body. The milling is quite impressive and boosts the overall look and feel of the gun. The front rubber grip gives you secure handling of the paintball gun. You will have full control over your gadget while holding it in your hands,

I found this marker exceptionally light in my hands which made the run around in the game zone easier. Its ultra light, which didn’t hurt my hand even after holding the hours in long game plays. It doesn’t stop in any weather conditions, the water-resistant properties of it withstand moisture or water droplets easily.

Compact QEV Module

Last but not least the gun has a sleek and compact QEV module for cycle consistency. For me it ensured a fast response and accuracy throughout my game

Pros

  • Better Grip and ergonomic design
  • Tool-less access to bolt, valve and solenoid
  • Fast Frame Removal
  • Exceptional Paint handling
  • Ultra-lightweight, slim and air efficient model

Cons

  • Expensive to buy
  • Suitable for professional players

Shocker SP AMP vs Planet Eclipse 170 R

Planet Eclipse 170R and Shocker AMP have a head to head market competition. Both guns have almost the same price bracket, with Shocker AMP being a bit over $100. Let’s see how one is better than the other and vice versa.

The major reason why you should invest $100 extra on shocker AMP is due to its improved efficiency. It operates at 110 psi operating pressure which makes your gun air efficient and can take 3 more bucks of paintballs.

If I talk about the barrel then Shocker Amp has an upper hand due to its 14-inch two-piece barrel.  The innovative point about this barrel is it accepts the Freak XL Insert. Therefore, it gives the flexibility to the user to adjust the bore size as you need.

Both the guns have an adjustable feed neck with a thumb wheel. The size of the wheel in PE 170R is quite big in size which gives a better grip to the user to tighten the hopper and add convenience.

Another highlight feature of 170R is its tool-less access to the front grip and battery component. You can alter the battery within 15 seconds. Moreover, the access to the eye covers is also completely toolless.  Whereas in shocker Amp you need the Allen wrenches to open the eye cover and clean the chopped paints. The battery of AMP is stored in the back grip, not on the front side.

Similarities:

  • Toolless Bolt Removal – Both have a turn & twist mechanism
  • They can handle brittle paints due to soft tip bolt
  • Both guns had a quick switch on and off button

Differences

  • Milling is different in both the guns
  • Operating pressure varies; 135 psi for PE and 110 for AMP
  • 170 is bit bulkier
  • AMP have a better shot quality with its new bolt system
